Fourth Floor Stacks Move Complete

Bester Bros arrived yesterday (7/12) and completed the move of the stacks on the fourth flor into their final configuration. The stacks have yet to be cross-braced.

The collection is out of order at this time, awaiting shifting. There are signs explaining how things are currently set up. If you can't find a book that you need, please fill out a "Construction Zone Request Form" at the Circulation Desk.

The Walls Go Up

Shelf Moving on Fourth Floor

Bester Brothers has returned to begin moving the shelving on the fourth floor into its new configuration. The process should take about two days, and be completed by the end of the day tomorrow.

Fourth Floor Collection Moves

Some of the collections on the west side of the fourth floor, more specifically some of the Hs on the existing single-sided shelving, have been moved to a temporary shelving location on the southwest side of the floor. Signs on the existing shelves will tell you where the collections have moved. If you have difficulty, pick up and fill out a "Construction Zone Request Form" at the Circulation Desk and we will locate the book for you and notify you that it is ready to be picked up. Retrieved materials will be located at the Circulation Desk.

Demolition of Fifth Floor Complete

Preliminary Timetable for Summer Library Building Projects

Demolition will begin next week and take place on all floors - first, fourth, and fifth floors - simultaneously.

Construction will take place primarily between the hours of 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.

Construction of the new walls in different areas is supposed to start June 21.

Dell projects the compact shelving in the new Special Collections area will be installed relatively early in August.

The completion date for the new instructional lab is August 4.

The completion date for the remodeling of the classrooms (2023A, B and C) is August 18.

There will be emergency doors installed just beyond the Family Friendly Study. Dell agreed in the meeting to build the wall but hold off on installing the doors as long as possible so users will have continued access to LILL in its current location until the equipment has been moved to its new first floor location.

New Fifth Floor Stack Configuration Almost Complete

Bester Bros was able to move all the shelving on the fifth floor into its final configuration today (though we still have to fill in a few gaps). There is also single sided shelving to be installed on the east side next to the existing graduate study. Dell Construction will be building that.

I encourage you to go up and take a look. Even though the lighting is not in place and even though it's clear we are going to have to find some money for additional carpet in some areas, I think you will be pleased with how much this opens up the stacks. There is much more room as you come off the main and southern stairways and it should be much easier for users to orient themselves to where they are on the floor when they exit the stairs. And take a look at what a difference made by having wider aisles.

Fourth Floor Stack Moving Plans in June

Fourth Floor:

June 19 and 20 - stacks moved to temporary location for carpet repair; also stacks moved to enable addition of one section at end.

June 28 and 29 - stacks to be moved to their final configuration. This gives Wall to Wall a full week in which to do the carpet repair in that area of the fourth floor, though it would be better to do it in the first couple days of that period so there will be sufficient time for the carpet glue to dry and to have that carpet shampooed.

Fifth Floor Shelving Move Today

Carpet Patching Begins Early

The carpet patching originally scheduled to begin on Wednesday, May 10, is already partially completed. Plans have changed and as of this date there is no intent to use a machine to clear the old carpet. Noise should no longer be a problem on that date.

Contractors will be in the library on Wednesday, May 10, to begin patching green carpet that was hidden under previously existing stacks. In order to remove the carpet, workers will need to use a machine which should create a significant amount of noise. We apologize that this will be occuring so close to finals. Unfortunately the timeline of the project dictates that it be completed as soon as possible. We will make our best effort to not have this significantly effect your studies.

Dissassembly of Shelving Thursday and Friday

Bester Brothers, a moving company out of St. Paul, MN, will be working on the fifth floor of the library this Thursday and Friday, May 4 and 5, to dissassemble shelving for storage/removal. Shelving will also moved from the fifth to the fourth floor. Also as part of this project, Dell Construction will also be arriving to remove single-sided shelving on the floor. This may result in noise. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

DVDs to be More Accessible on First Floor

The library is currently exploring moving the DVDs out from behind the Circulation Desk into a location near the Music CD collection on the first floor. Some processing is necessary, but by the fall you should be able to freely view all of our DVDs. Stay tuned!

Quiet Study Zone Temporarily Moved to Fourth Floor

Due to current collection shifting and impending construction noise, we have decided to temporarily move the Quiet Study Zone from the fifth floor to the fourth floor. With the end of the semester at hand, we hope this will offer students the quiet study area they deserve. The fifth floor will again become the quiet study floor in the fall when construction ends.

Reference Stacks Move Almost Complete

You may have noticed how open the Reference collection area has become. High shelves and low shelves have been switched so all low shelving greets you from the beginning row of the collection. We have also removed shelving from the beginning of the Reference collection in an effort to make it easier to locate items and offer additional study spaces.

Weeding of the collection will continue through the summer and additional shelving may be installed to accomodate the newspaper indexes, currently located on the north wall of the first floor, just after the new book shelf.

Carpet and Furniture Installed in Old Library/Schofield Breezeway

Temporary shelving have also been set on the southeast corner of the floor. This shelving will be moved in late May to its permanent location.

New Furniture Arrives for the Old Library/Schofield Breezeway

Lights Out in Part of Fifth Floor

Richardson Electric is beginning today to do some of the electrical work associated with the reconfiguration of the stacks on the fifth floor. There is a small portion of the stacks (on the southeast facing Phillips lot) that will be without light for a few days as we move the shelving units and shift onto them. There's a good chance that there will not be lights in that particular area again until early next week.

Reference Collections Shift and Move

In anticipation of construction of the information literacy lab on the first floor, you will notice reference collections shelves being removed and moved. Here's what's happened so far...

Shelves have been removed next to government documents to accomodate the construction
High shelves have been replaced with low sheves in the range closest to the reference desk.
Shelves have been added in the government processing area.

The referenbce collection will be heavily weeded in the next few months in the hopes of reducing its footprint to accomodate the lab and offer and lean and mean collection which will serve your information needs.

Collection Moves

The stacks PZ 7's are in the process of being recataloged and integrated with the IMC Fiction Collection. There is a notice posted on the stacks. If you cannot locate an item in this collection, please fill out a not-in-stacks request at the Circulation Desk and we will locate the item for you.

The Z's are now being backshifted at the end of what used to be the location of the Oversize Collection on the 5th floor. This will be a continuous process. The move will occur as quickly as possible, so you can expect that the V's, U's, etc. will move continually throughout the semester. Signs will be posted but again, if you cannot locate an item, the easiest solution is to fill out a not-in-stacks request.

New Construction Projects Slated for Summer 2006

At the end of the spring semester, construction will begin on our next projects.

A new instructional lab will be constructed where the Government Publications offices are currently located.
Government publications staff will relocate to different spots in the library when that occurs.
Special Collections will have a new area constructed for them on the fifth floor and should be moving in the fall.
Related to this work, many of the stacks on the fourth and fifth floors will be reconfigured.
Work will also be done on L2023A-C. A permanent wall will be constructed between B and C and a folding partition providing better sound control will be constructed between A and B. An emergency door will be built between the library and old library, near the entrance to L2023B. Access to B and C will then only be available through the Old Library except when A and B are used simultaneously.
Finally, the loading dock area will be remodeled.

The entirety of this project is expected to be completed by mid-October, 2006.

Main Stairwell Update

The main stairwell painting is now complete on the Lower Level through Second floors. Painting is slated to conitnue on the Third, Fourth and Fifth Floors. Look for signage or construction tape. Alternate stairwell on the west and south will remain open.

IMC Project Completed - and Celebrated!

The IMC move and renovation is now (basically) complete. Additional furniture was added to meet student demand.

Sprinkler Replacement Project Complete

The Fourth Floor is complete and the Fifth Floor is underway. Completion of the Fifth Floor is expected the end of this week, so there may still be some issues with sound for students studying for Finals. Painters are currently also on site to paint the pipes to match the ceilings.

Media Equipment to IMC

The media equipment has now been moved to the new IMC location. Due to changing use patterns, not all the equipment was moved from the old to the new location. We will be trying to monitor the use of this equipment but if you find you need a particular piece of equipment to view or listen to a piece and it is not available, please let someone at the Circulation or Reference desks know. We will change the mix of equipment if use demands it. Remember that groups can check out either L101 or L103 at the Circulation Desk to view videos or DVDs or to listen to recordings. Remember also that better quality headphones are available to be checked out at the Circulation Desk - in fact, some of the equipment will require it as the headphones currently in the IMC will not work with all the equipment.

Bring in 'Da Noise

Second Floor Demolition Begins

"Clean and Treat" Process to Begin This Week

As early as today, workers will begin the "clean and treat" process of the pipe on the Lower Level and in the Penthouse (above Fifth Floor). The process will involve using a compressor to pipe an acidic foam into the pipes, which will then be flushed outside into tanks. Workers will then flood the pipes with water with a bacterial treatment additive in it. That will then be flushed. The process should not be very disruptive. You can expect some compressor noise and there may be some odor from the process on the Lower Level or on the Fifth Floor, but the chemicals they are using are natural and safe.

First Floor Sprinkler Replacement Update

IMC Collections Move Complete

Most media equipment remains in its old location and will stay there until the sprinker system replacement project in that area is complete - to ensure access to at least some media equipment during that project.

Pipe Replacement Starts Tonight on First Floor

IMC Furniture Installed

IMC Picture Files Partially Moved

IMC Media Rooms in Operation

The two IMC media rooms where groups can listen to recordings or view videos or DVDs are now in operation. The cable television connection is not yet working, however. Keys to the rooms may be checked out at the Circulation Desk. Both rooms have tables and seating for four. Room 101 also has a loveseat and upholstered chair and can thus accommodate larger groups.

Walkway Between Library and Davies to be Blocked

In order to make room for a 30-foot trailer and a dumpster during the sprinkler system replacement, the walkway between Davies and the library will be closed and gated off. Library users approaching from the Phillips lot will need to walk around the back of the library building or enter through Davies Center. The two main entrances to the library will remain open and accessible during construction.

Water to be turned off Tuesday, Sept. 27 a.m.

VCRs and CD/Cassette Players Moved

Two VCR/Monitors and one CD/Cassette player were moved to the new IMC.
Headphones are available at that location or a better quality headphone can be checked out at the Circulation Desk. The media carrels on which this equipment is located are on the east side of the new IMC, behind the Videotapes. We hope to move the rest of the media equipment to the IMC later this week. In the meantime, viewing stations are split between the Second Floor and Lower Level locations.

Sprinkler System to Be Replaced Starting Monday, Sept. 26

Starting next Monday, September 26, work will begin to replace the sprinkler system throughout the library. The current sprinkler system is susceptible to leaks which could damage collections and systems. Work will begin on the Lower Level and move upward. We anticipate that the project will not be completed until December. During construction some areas of the building and some collections may be unavailable. The library will make every effort to retrieve materials from work areas upon request.

In the meantime, the equipment in the carrels in the far corner of the old IMC on 2nd floor is still connected and can be used; however, there's no access to any multimedia group study rooms at this time.

IMC Collection Move Update - Part III

The IMC Journal and Textbook Collections have been moved to the lower level, and the Professional Collection move is underway. Call numbers A-KF are on the lower level, while KF-Z are still on 2nd floor. As of this afternoon, the entire video collection has been moved to the new IMC location, as have the Children's Fiction and Nonfiction collections. The Historical Children's Book collection was moved earlier to storage compact shelving. Easy fiction [picture] books have been partially moved and the multimedia collection is also in the process of being moved. Textbooks will begin to be moved Wednesday, September 7. We hope to have almost all collections moved by the end of the week.

New Book Drop Installed

Yesterday a new book drop was installed under the overhang on the river entrance to the library. The drop is the culmination of years of planning. This adds another location, in addition to the drop at the library entrance near Davies, where you can return your library materials. The drop is open 24/7.

Flooring removed (and Installed)

Today the vinyl flooring in the new vending machine area was installed and existing carpet and tile were removed from other areas of the floor.

Lower Level Library Plans Finalized

The plans for the new IMC and the complete Lower Level of the library have been finalized. You can view them at http://www.uwec.edu/library/Maps/imc.pdf.

IMC Construction Underway

Construction of the new IMC area on the lower level began on May 23rd. This move involved condensing of the Storage collection already housed there. Jan Bogstad, Diana Germain and others have been busily weeding the collection to make room for IMC materials. The IMC collection itself was heavily and weeded and updated by Education Librarian Becky Wojahn in anticipation of the move.

Welcome to the new McIntyre Library Construction blog. We have a number of projects coming up in the next few years which we want to update you on. These moves will make the library more accesible and result in better service for students, faculty and staff alike. These include:

Move of IMC from Second Floor to Lower Level
Replacement of Sprinkler System throughout the library
Move of Library Instruction Lab (LILL) from Second Floor to the First Floor
